There are a few large Spanish contractors that occupy a privileged position in the country's business structure as enterprises of great economic power and competitive ability, both within the domestic market and internationally. These are companies with a significant operational presence in the world's main economies and, as such, they have adapted perfectly to the challenges of globalization.

The development of the large contractors has been based on demand for civil works by the State and demand for new non-residential buildings by private individuals and companies. These have been the motors that have driven their expansion throughout the 20th century and, in particular, in the second half of the century, when the demand for construction has been more intense and domestic markets more dynamic.

In these years of expansion, the large contractors have accumulated an unquestionable amount of knowledge and experience from abroad. This has allowed them to improve their resources and capabilities and, therefore, their competitiveness in the domestic market. In addition, the internationalization that they initiated in these years facilitated their entrance into foreign markets in a context of greater competition.

It was in these years that the first cycle of internationalization of the large Spanish construction firms began. This was triggered by the increase in the number of foreign bids that were submitted for projects awarded through official tenders. The price factor was still the decisive criterion, but a greater degree of competition existed with the arrival of foreign companies and the lifting of some of the restrictions that had been placed on these firms.

Initially, these were created in the countries of Latin America and North Africa, regions where there was a high level of construction activity on the part of the Spanish builders.
